It tells of wars that kill and create disabilities, first and foremost among children. It tells of economic and political interests played out on the skin of the most vulnerable, but it also tells of the strength of shared responsibility. It tells of steep climbs, great sorrows, and great injustices that, faced alone, crush you, but faced together can somehow become manageable. It tells of the beauty of variety and diversity, and it tells of death, one of the aspects of life, not a scandal to be hidden. Above all, though, this historical novel set during the period of brigandage (the response of southern peasants to a national unification imposed through violence and arrogance) tells the story of a wonderful father figure. A man who, giving up everything, chooses to fight for justice without ever resorting to violence ("He had set his mind on managing to do something […], on finding a way to change things without gunfire"). Because alternatives to hatred do exist.
