Patricia is sixty, a widow living with Giorgio, her youngest son. He is thirty-three, with an intellectual disability stemming from Williams syndrome. They are inseparable—shadow and light—traveling daily from the outskirts of Naples to the city for the various programs Giorgio attends. Patricia carries a heavy question in her heart, one she wrestles with those closest to her and with Giorgio himself. Her son, who has never kissed anyone, never had a romantic relationship, has begun asking his mother if he might pay for the affection of one of the women he encounters during their daily walks through the city. We follow them through this journey—outward, across the streets and buildings of a Naples perpetually alive with energy, and inward, through terrain of profound human depth that reaches far beyond their individual story. This is the first, and finest, of four documentaries titled The Body of Love, now available on Rai Play. The series explores the difficult yet vital subject of intimacy and sexuality in the context of disability. The true story of Patricia and Giorgio is told with remarkable sensitivity by directors Monica Repetto and Pietro Balla, produced by Deriva Film. Their approach—and that of the three subsequent episodes—does not shy away from difficult, delicate, and intimate questions. They tell these stories without violating the real people involved. The warm narration of Enrica Bonaccorti adds depth to a project that refuses to oversimplify the inevitable complexity of each case. The subject is uncomfortable, almost provocative: a real mental barrier stands in the way of engaging with it honestly. Here, people with disabilities claim their "freedoms," challenging the assumption that disability means the absence of sexuality. But sexual freedom without emotional connection leaves us with questions unanswered. The fourth episode is equally worth watching—it documents Italy's first training program for intimacy caregivers. We won't find definitive answers, but the conversation has truly begun.
