A dad tells the story of the first years of his first child's life. The various challenges of birth and early childhood (premature birth, surgery, high fever...) leave the parents with a son who is slow, clumsy, apparently behind for his age and poorly integrated among other children. In fact, from kindergarten onwards the parents are advised to put Tod in a special school, which they do with a heavy heart.
Then, by chance, the mom discovers a special re-education method. The parents with the child and the help of many volunteers undertake an exhausting work of re-education, all done at home.
Thanks to the tenacity and perseverance of everyone (the therapy lasts practically from morning to evening every day without interruption, neither on Sundays nor on other holidays) the path undertaken continues, with regular check-ups, for more than a year and brings the child to a level of development that allows him to enter school with everyone.
The story reads easily because it is written in a concrete, lively way. The protagonists—parent, children, doctors, teachers, friends—are all captivating.
Moreover, a chapter that describes the schedule of the program offers a certain idea of the method followed (Doman method)
Only one element makes this book not entirely convincing: the intention, transparent despite everything, to write a work in praise of this method.
