Two Steps Forward, One Step Back — Newsletter No. 20

Fede e Luce navigates post-Covid reopening; an influential but little-known man dead forty years and his "Madness Unbound"; "Together," the hidden history of Ombre e Luci; Benedetta finally reaches the sea: the many stories of Newsletter No. 20.
Two Steps Forward, One Step Back — Newsletter No. 20

Two steps forward, one step back… – Questions and answers. Closures and openings. Horizons narrowing, new vistas opening wide. After months wholly unlike what we might have imagined, summer arrived—familiar as always, yet still bristling with uncertainty. Two steps forward, one step back on a path that remains uneven. Serena Sillitto invites us to walk a stretch of it together in a story that is both tender and funny, tracing the tentative return to normalcy in the communities of Fede e Luce. Difficulty and doubt linger still—a "makeshift normalcy" that falls short, certainly, but helps all the same.

Two steps forward, one step back, too, along the path marked by the man who, drawing a historic watershed, "carried Italian society (and beyond) across a threshold between two eras." Franco Basaglia died forty years ago—widely cited, rarely truly known. Giulia Galeotti offers us a portrait of him, confident that "there is still much to do, but so much has already been done." Carlo Cinus enriches that portrait by presenting the documentary that may best capture his spirit and legacy.

… and summer has arrived – So yes, summer is here. Two steps forward, one step back. As we wish you well on holiday, we invite you to spend these months with us, Together. While the newsletter itself takes a break (returning renewed in early autumn), we'll continue our conversation with a summer edition. Between tradition (Benedetta's Blog) and fresh material (Picked for You by Claudio Cinus), what we're offering is a journey into the prehistory of Ombre e Luci: back in 1974, the first issue of Together rolled off the press—a modest mimeographed bulletin that would become our magazine nine years later. So began the work alongside the most fragile among us, their families and friends—a journey we'll retrace through the rich, poetic, and joyful testimonies of those who were there. Because if travel is good, traveling through this strange, suspended summer of 2020 will surely be better still!

Fede e Luce Life

The Spark Reignites – Covid-19 forced the cancellation of a cooking course involving Fede e Luce, ANGSA, Il Faro 23, and Fuori di Teatro. But one phone call was enough to rekindle the desire to move forward. Weeks later, they held the course online, bringing together sixteen young people and a chef.
