Two New Faith and Light Communities Celebrate in Umbria

Two groups, "seedlings" of Faith and Light, have recently been recognized as full communities. The family grows with great joy!

Stories woven together make up the threads of a larger, more complex story. A year ago, I knew none of these people. Now here we are in Terni, sharing a piece of the road together at the Spring Festival. Like every Faith and Light gathering, the day begins with Mass, followed by a shared meal—a symbol of community built through the simplest, most ordinary things, yet binding us into one great family. Then come songs, dances, and the inevitable pantomime, all in one big circle beneath a sun that finally shines generously on us. All the communities mixed together in joyful chaos: The Hidden Treasure (Terni), The Journey (Perugia), The Sunflower (Rome), and us—The Precious Pearl (Assisi, Santa Maria degli Angeli).

What beautiful names, each one full of meaning. Ours, The Precious Pearl, reminds us that something great and precious can be born even from suffering. A simple invitation from Father Stefano was all it took to spark their curiosity, and now, they tell me, they feel they need Faith and Light. And then there are our friends with disabilities, the heart of everything. When they want to embrace you, they embrace you tight. They wait only for your eyes to meet theirs before offering you a smile—simple, open, joyful.

I watch Andrea, who refuses to be stopped by his physical difficulties. He zips around on his scooter and never turns down a good conversation. During one of those conversations, he told me: "When you pray, you have to trust and surrender." Then there are the families—mothers and fathers who bend under the weight of their children's suffering but do not break, knowing they are guardians of something important. Gisella, Salvina, Vittorio, Luciana, Patrizia, Maria Chiara—there is a story behind each of these names. Together they tell me that difference exists, that disability exists, that suffering exists. But the real limitation is being afraid to look it straight in the eye. A pain shared becomes lighter. And true faith must transform us into light for others.

Then comes the moment of goodbyes. We offer a special one to Sister Mariangela, someone indispensable to our community who, after a year spent together, will leave for Morocco to share her enthusiasm and gifts with those most in need. Now it is time for each of us to go our own way. Until next time, when we will mix together again in this festive disorder that, by the end of the day, will have us say: "I am tired but happy!"
