The Mystery of So Much Good

Remembering Angelo Volpi

It is beautiful to see a world of "so many people" who know how to recognize the "so much good" that was the life of Angelo and Rosa. Yes, "Angelo and Rosa" — because the facts themselves revealed this truth to us. Angelo and Rosa cannot be remembered apart. Each one needs the other, and so it goes.

The facts of our lives show us who we really are. In our fragility, none of us can be enough unto ourselves. Each of us needs an "other." As long as we resist this powerful truth, no life can flourish and grow as Angelo and Rosa's did.

Months later, I understand something else. I can see Angelo and Rosa's life not only in all the good we have shared about them, but also in the "mystery" that surrounds them. It is the secret of a life lived for each other — a secret from which we continually draw facts, words, and moments that fill our memories. That "secret," that "mystery," which keeps unfolding, is the treasure that Angelo and Rosa leave to their family, to our parish community, and to Fede e Luce here in Conselve in the Raggi di Sole and throughout the entire International Movement.

Starting from this "secret," other memories of mine take on meaning too: confessions lived each time in spaces of religious silence, and his questions about God; the greeting to his mother that I always asked him to bring her, answered with words that showed what it meant to be her son; the warm, personal greeting he gave to me and to everyone when he passed by, accompanied, in front of the patronato or on his usual walk to the interior bar; the extraordinary dialogue between Angelo and Matteo when they began to discuss and traveled, in their speech, with words and phrases that only the two of them had the power to understand and to share. Marvelous lives!

That "secret," that "mystery," has not ended. It continues to unfold, always, with the certainty of faith that "we were born never to die again" and our life is "hidden with Christ in God the Father."
