The Cat on the Desk – Newsletter No. 16

With Goethe's help, we reconsider what's broken between school, remote learning, and disability. More on COVID-19: the surprising discoveries of Sergio's quarantine and a furious Benedetta's manifesto against masks. Plus a video on the world's most famous Albanian woman.

The analysis – This time we're offering you the expert ourselves. With her credentials—forty years teaching middle school and thirty years raising a Roma fan with a disability—we asked Nicla Bettazzi to respond to a letter published in Corriere della Sera by Beatrice's mother, who describes how school failed her disabled daughter during COVID-19. Nicla accepted, and her piece widens the view of what school is not—but should and could be.

Testimony – The effects of COVID-19, more or less expected, have been and will remain severe in our lives, including for those living with disability, as we heard in worried accounts from various voices. Marina Vigliar was initially anxious about the sudden emergency, fearing her son might "lose control, as he has over smaller things in the past." But Marina discovered she had "so much still to learn, from him and from others." What she learned during quarantine—softened by Sergio's unexpected resources and the network of friends who, despite the physical distance, became an anchor—has been a balm for many wounds.

The video – The life of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, told for children. We present a video created with texts by Benoît Machon and Noëlle Herrenschmidt (who also did the illustrations). Originally published in issue 63 of Ombre e Luci from 1998, they show how rich an archive can remain timeless.
