The authors of this brief and invaluable guide have adapted and enriched a book by two American specialists, Fox and Azrin, drawing on their own experience working with children with severe disabilities. As the title suggests, they set out to teach parents and educators how to help a child achieve continence—even one with serious handicaps—thereby eliminating the burden of diapers and the exhaustion that falls on caregivers. The book walks through various scenarios, includes illustrations of each learning stage, provides charts to help overcome each step, and offers quizzes to test understanding—all presented in simple, clear language. Putting these methods into practice will certainly demand patience and commitment. But we urge parents to summon their goodwill and perseverance; the reward—the enormous benefit their child will gain—may well be worth the effort. So why not try?
