The ICS "G. Barra" in Salerno enrolls 1,283 students, 52 of whom have disabilities—36 of them attending middle school. Many face significant challenges: severe handicaps complicated by behavioral and learning difficulties. The school has made the inclusion of students with disabilities central to its mission, culture, and identity.
"Our school has become a refuge and landmark on this territory for young people with special educational needs. We have practiced inclusive methods for years and guarantee every student the right to learn. Integrating students facing disadvantage is ongoing, complex work. It demands expertise, resources, and coordination with public services, families, and teachers—all working together, sharing knowledge, and learning as we go.
With this in mind, we seek partners in the community for collaborative, networked efforts that put students' special educational needs at the center. The StudentInSella project grew from a simple conviction: students with disabilities should have access to activities that improve their quality of life—activities that nurture their physical, psychological, and motor development.
We wanted to bring equestrian sport into their reach—not as competition, but as play and discovery. Through hippotherapy, we can offer learning experiences they might otherwise never encounter. The Sporting Association "Un Cuore a Cavallo," a nonprofit based in Baronissi, will lead the program. They bring trained instructors experienced in teaching riding to people with disabilities, plus all necessary equipment and materials.
The project will run for three years and involve 20 students; eight are participating this year. Our aims are clear: boost participants' wellbeing—physically, relationally, neurologically, and neuromotorially.
This vision would have gone nowhere without a decisive encounter. The school met Michele Albanese, general director of Banca Monte Pruno. He understood at once what we were trying to do, and he believed in it. His enthusiasm and generosity made it possible to bring smiles to a group of remarkable young people.
Supporting a project that improves the lives of those facing disadvantage means investing in what is truly valuable—human potential—and giving our work deeper meaning and purpose. That is the mark of authentic humanity.
