Sport, Solidarity, and Inclusion: A Formula That Leaves Its Mark

My address at the AISM press conference
Sport, Solidarity, and Inclusion: A Formula That Leaves Its Mark

May 21 was a big day for me. I was there for the official presentation of the event 12 Hours Swimming with Love for AISM, held at the “Giulio Marinozzi” Council Hall of the Foro Italico University, in Piazza De Bosis 4. The public event was attended by 50 people involved in the initiative, along with several local media outlets. I shared, in particular, my personal experience testifying to the physical and psychological benefits of swimming regularly, which has had a positive impact on my condition as a person with a physical disability.

It was a wonderful opportunity to talk about the importance of loving swimming. This is what happens, I think, when sport creates connection: the human value comes through. Swimming shouldn’t be seen only on a sporting level. It can also serve a truly important cause. That’s why I’m grateful they chose me as their testimonial.

I first met AISM (the Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association) in 2024: it is Italy’s leading point of reference for people living with multiple sclerosis and related conditions. It works across every area to guarantee autonomy, inclusion, and quality of life for patients and their families. Through its foundation (FISM), it promotes, directs, and funds multiple sclerosis research both nationally and internationally. It also offers welcome services, guidance, psychological support, and practical assistance (e.g. accompanied transport, home support) through a wide-reaching network of local branches and volunteers.

My experience with them on the 21st was fantastic, and I hope the door will one day open to a collaboration between AISM and Fede e Luce. I also want to thank all the Fede e Luce participants taking part in the “Swim with Love in the 12 Hours” initiative. A proposal put forward by captain Fabio Graziani. Thank you all, truly, because it’s only by fighting together that we can break down barriers. Sport, solidarity, and inclusion: a formula that leaves its mark!
