Roberto's Mother

I received two copies of "Insieme." It is beautiful!
In its simplicity, it moves me. It is written with nothing, yet it says everything. Everything we have kept locked in our hearts: the pain, the worries, the faith, the hopes.
I read it all eagerly, searching in its words for the person writing them, and in every one I find a bit of myself. I wait for it with longing and emotion, the way you wait for a letter from someone you love. Then I show it to Roberto and tell him: "These are our friends!"

...I began to understand that these children must not be ignored, but helped—because they too have a sensitivity through which they perceive the love surrounding them.

Despite their inability to speak, they reveal all their joy when they feel helped and protected. And it is in recognizing the help they receive that we ourselves feel repaid for what we give.

Now I see the changes they can bring about in a person who cares for them: a growth of the spirit that can only be found in contact with these children, when we give them a bit of our time...

Fernanda Mamprin, 1975

To Roberto, From His Mother

"Mama." Sweet word
that blooms from your lips,
Sweeter still to me
because you say so little else.

My heart overflows with love
when I hear "Mama!"
Say it to me, say it again
and my soul finds peace.
