This small volume collects twenty-six letters that the great poet Rilke wrote to his mother on Christmas Eve, signs of his affection and his presence from afar. They had arranged to read each other's letters and open their Christmas packages at the same moment—six o'clock on December 24th. These letters should be read by all of us. They should be given as Christmas gifts and kept close at hand for those moments when we ache for someone we love and miss, or when we search for that particular warmth that flows between children and their parents—or for a faith strong enough never to falter.
