O&L Meets...

This newsletter takes us far afield! We're delighted to have them on this month's cover with our magazine in hand, as we greet the PIME missionaries in Hong Kong. On many occasions they have shared their experiences with Ombre e Luci readers, bringing us into the welcome communities they have founded and in which they live alongside people with disabilities, or as assistants to the Fede e Luce communities active there. We are truly glad to see them, and we thank them not only for their testimony to the Gospel, but for their concrete closeness to Ombre e Luci!

Book of the Month

Photographer Nicola Gronchi undertook «a pilgrimage rather than a work tour» through some of Italy's abandoned former psychiatric hospitals. In La bellezza nella mente (Felici Editore, 2020), his lens offers a view of «places once prestigious and beautiful, alienating and degrading methods, elements that evoke the human beings who inhabited them (…) highlighting that fracture we have yet to heal». Black-and-white photographs of the institutes in Volterra, Cogoleto, Colorno, Maggiano, and Pistoia are framed by important historical contributions from psychiatrists Liliana Dell'Osso and Primo Lorenzi. The review is by Cristina Tersigni.

Acting for the Agenda

On September 25, 2015, all 193 UN member states unanimously approved new goals for a sustainable future. It was the Agenda 2030, which revised the strategy for combating poverty and hunger: by integrating environmental, social, and economic dimensions, it made explicit the need for greater inclusion of people with disabilities, calling on each country to take concrete action. And it is the Agenda 2030 that inspires Agendo per l'agenda, «the first and only experiment at the European level in terms of capacity to aggregate an ecosystem of civil and institutional actors across an entire territory,» realized in Piedmont and the Aosta Valley. Silvia Camisasca tells us about it.

End-of-Year Pizza

I went to dinner with all my classmates and five teachers. We went to a pizzeria in Trastevere. We met at Piazza Belli at 8 o'clock. Then we walked because it's nearby. I was a bit emotional at first. I only see my classmates in class. Read more…

Fede e Luce Life

Communities have gradually started meeting in person again: among many gatherings last month, we received lovely photos from the communities of Gratosoglio (MI), Spirito d'Amore (BA), and Casa della Pace (Albania). To accompany this awakening of communities, Mari and Vulcani organized a training day, Cuore di Primavera, to resume team activities slowed by the pandemic.

A River of Peace pilgrimage is already on its third leg, set to touch all communities in the province, starting from Piedmont all the way to Galilee. The boat was launched at the mouth of the Po on May 30, arrived in Turin on June 7, and in Vigliano last Sunday. On June 19 it will be in Lombardy… safe travels!

Once again, it is important to close the distance through friendship: support Fede e Luce with your 5x1000. Write our tax ID 96000680585 on your tax return, in the box for nonprofits.
