I Shoot Penalties Too
Benedetta at the Palazzetto dello Sport in Rome (Giampaolo Mattei, 2023)

So I went to the Olimpico stadium to watch Roma play Empoli, and then I went to the Palaeur to see volleyball matches. I scored two goals in a game with my friends who play for AS Roma under 17—that means they're 16 years old. They're all tall. Really tall. And they run constantly, all the time. Me, I walk. When it's sunny and warm I play in the shade. Now that it's cold I play wherever, it depends. At the stadium I cheered for both Roma and Empoli. Because my friend Duccio Degl'Innocenti plays for Empoli, and I've known him since I was very little. We go to the beach at the same place and our umbrellas are right next to each other. At the beach Duccio plays football all the time, and every so often I shoot penalties. He plays with his brother Daniele and his dad Luciano. And with other people too, like Elia Maccherini Tonini, who plays for a team called Paganese but used to play for Brescia. At the stadium with Roma, though, Duccio didn't play and I got mad. I kept saying the coach should have put him in. I saw Duccio on television playing for Empoli against Juventus. My uncle Angelo and my cousin Luca—they're Juve fans—they showed it to me.

At the Palaeur I had so much fun watching volleyball. Two teams played, and then the winners went to the final. Everyone was incredibly tall, and when they spiked the ball it would end up in the crowd. People kept telling me I was doing great because I know how the game works. You have to get to 25 points and then you switch sides. When you get 25 points three times you've won. I liked that fans from all four teams were together, singing and beating drums and holding all these signs. I had more fun at the Palaeur because it was more comfortable. The Olimpico is harder to get around—you have to walk so much—and it's so much bigger and the seats are less comfortable.

At the first match I said Piacenza would win because their red-and-white jersey was pretty, and then they announced Francesco Recine over the speakers. Recine is the last name of one of my favorite teachers at school. But his first name is Gianluca. Anyway, I cheered for Piacenza and they won 3-0. Everyone told me I should have cheered for Perugia—they'd won their last 33 games. But I had a feeling Piacenza would win. Then I cheered for Milano, but Trento won instead. That's okay though because my grandfather was from Trentino and I've been there a lot.
