Google Maps Now Shows Accessible Routes

After gradually rolling out the ability to check accessibility at public locations over the past few years—thanks to its Local Guides program—Google Maps has added a new feature to its Android and iOS apps. Users can now choose routes that avoid architectural barriers, making navigation easier for wheelchair users, those on crutches, and parents with strollers.

To activate the option, click on "Options" after selecting a public transit route.

Google is working to expand the feature rapidly across many cities, though for now the service is available only in New York, Boston, London, Mexico City, Sydney, and Tokyo. It will likely take considerably longer before major Italian cities are included.

Google has also begun adding Street View images of the interiors of major train stations around the world, so users can see what a station looks like and how it's laid out before they arrive.

Here's Google's official presentation.
