"Faith gave my husband and me tremendous strength. Without it, we would have lived in despair."

Today we thank God for the gift of these two wonderful daughters (Alessia died in 1991 at age 12—ed.). Emanuela no longer speaks; her tongue is frozen. But in her eyes we always read her needs, what she is trying to tell us.

I believe our daughter lived so fully, despite her suffering, because of the love surrounding her—ours and that of the people who stood by us. This is why I sometimes think of so many young people who have no anchor, burdened with problems, wasting their days in nightclubs and leaving them sadder than when they arrived.

If they could experience solidarity and real connection with young people like our daughter, they would grow and love life more deeply. They would overcome their own struggles and anxieties."
