On Thursday, January 3, the first in a monthly series of public forums on disability and social inclusion launches in Palermo.
Disability Dialogue in Palermo

Starting Thursday, January 3 at the Aula Rostagno in Palazzo delle Aquile in Palermo, "Disability Dialogue" will bring together citizens and advocacy groups to discuss disability and social inclusion. The event, organized by the Fondazione delle Ginestre, runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Paolo Caracausi, provincial secretary of the Italian Values party and Palermo city councilman, will moderate. Mayor Leoluca Orlando is expected to attend.

"Disability often runs up against stereotypes and prejudices—sometimes unconscious ones," Caracausi says. "These shape personal behavior and also political and social choices that end up being discriminatory. The law promises equal opportunity, but daily life doesn't always deliver it. Institutions sometimes fail to provide the services people need, and disability still frightens some. Thanks to the Fondazione delle Ginestre and Antonella Balistreri, we'll have a chance to dig deeper into these issues on the third of every month, in different venues, so we can find solutions and build stronger community bonds".
