I came away a bit disappointed from the audience in St. Peter's Square. I was there with my son Marco in his wheelchair. When we entered the square, those of us accompanying disabled children in wheelchairs were directed along a separate route and lined up to the side. I had asked if we could go up front by the steps, where other disabled people were already positioned, but they said no. Other people who came after me were allowed through. Still, from where we were stationed we could see well enough, and the large screen was close by. The Pope passed us in his popemobile—twice, actually. I kept hoping he would stop, get out of the car, and give our children a touch, a blessing. He passed by, waved to everyone, blessed everyone. I had come with such excitement for this audience. I was so charged up! I suppose I was hoping for a little more attention.
In Assisi we stayed at one hotel, but meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—were served at a different, much larger hotel. There was a long line at the single elevator to reach the dining area. All that back-and-forth annoyed me, not so much the children but us caregivers.
Everything else went well. We got along beautifully among ourselves—there was real teamwork, and everyone helped each other. It's always lovely to see friends you've known for years and make new ones. These are good occasions. I hope it won't be too long before we all get together again.
