Reviewing a book like this makes me nervous—it's almost like reviewing the Bible itself. With all due respect, you could call it the Bible of community life. I first read it as a young man, then it was assigned to me as spiritual reading during my two years of theology in seminary. You need a map for community life, or you'll lose your way. That worn copy of mine disappeared—someone stole it. Which tells you something right there about community life: it includes things like the theft of a battered book. Vanier brought decades of lived community experience to these pages. He found treasure where others had stopped looking. He spotted pearls in places where many smelled only decay. His tools, his discoveries, his methods, his wonder, his reflections are all here—the kind of book you read slowly, a bit at a time. Every community needs it: the small household, the residential community, the great household that is the Church. I keep two copies now. I think you can guess why.
