Archival content: this article was published more than 10 years ago. The language and content reflect the sensitivities of the time.

In four brief episodes, the author takes us into moments from his childhood, each one enriched by short, practical advice for parents facing that particular situation. Four stories told from a child's point of view, which makes them deeply engaging—though it should be said, some of the language used is decidedly grown-up.

The final account is especially striking: Giancarlo leaves his hometown to have surgery, and we feel every emotion he experienced during the journey and his time in the hospital. It's an undemanding read, yet vivid and moving in its descriptions.
