James Martin in "An Irish Goodbye"

An Irish Goodbye enriched the festival's lineup with a prescient choice: this short film had just won the Academy Award. James Martin, the lead actor living with Down syndrome, had double reason to celebrate—his birthday and an Oscar for a film that opens right after a funeral. Two brothers from Northern Ireland lose their mother. One, who emigrated to England, returns for the service. The other, who has Down syndrome and lived with her on the family farm, refuses to leave. They fight—sometimes harshly, in language that doesn't shy away from rough edges—yet they love each other deeply, despite a relationship strained by one brother's life choices and the other's perceived limitations. Their mother's memory seems to guide them from beyond, putting them through a series of improbable trials that ultimately help them mend their bond. The film tackles the question of life after caregiving with audacity and dark humor. Both brothers, in their own ways, want independence. To achieve it, they have to learn to depend on each other.
