I wish I could find words to express all my gratitude for what I have received from you—through your books, our meetings, and your remarkable work.
I can only tell you this: among the many memories I hold in my heart, one captures so much of who you are and what you taught me that it remains especially dear.
It is the memory of your meeting with John Paul II when you received the Paolo VI Prize.
We were all there, full of joy. I can still see you clearly in my mind as you approached the aging, frail Pontiff with all the gentleness and love that lived in you. You went to him, took his arm, and walked with him slowly toward his chair. I will never forget how your affection was expressed then—not only in your words, but in the way you held yourself, in your gaze, in your gestures. All of us felt it deeply in that moment: this was your way of being, your way of living. And we wanted to learn to be and live as you did.
