A Hymn to Life: Book Review

Benedetta, 11, reviews Erika Gazzola's book and tells us why she loved it—and why you should read it
A Hymn to Life: Book Review
Archival content: this article was published more than 20 years ago. The language and content reflect the sensitivities of the time.

This book gathers the themes and poems of Erika, written during her short but intensely lived life. Like so many others, Erika fell victim to the street.

What struck me most about this book is the maturity Erika shows in her writing from as early as first grade. She marvels at the wonders of creation, reflects on a day spent with a friend, or gives thanks for a beautiful gift—things that so many of us take for granted.

In the section about family, Erika tells us about the arrival of her baby brother, Simone, whom she sees as a wonderful gift from God.

But Erika is also aware of the many problems in the world. She wonders why humanity has so often chosen war over peace. In one poem, she writes: "Man thinks that war will solve the problem of worth, of wanting, wanting. Too great is his need to possess and to command."

I believe that reading this true hymn to life can teach us all something.

The book can be ordered through the Erika Association
