A Disability Expert at the Table: Giampiero Griffo Joins Italy's Coronavirus Recovery Task Force
Some have noted that the number of experts exceeds the number of recoveries. Others have complained that women—as if the pandemic were powerless against tradition—remain largely excluded. Still, there is one piece of good news: among the 17 members of the Committee of ExpertsGiampiero Griffo—coordinator of the Technical and Scientific Committee of the National Observatory on the Condition of People with Disabilities.

Who is Giampiero Griffo

Since the 1970s, Giampiero Griffo has been a leader in the disability rights movement at both national and international levels. He serves on the World Council of DPI (Disabled Peoples' International) and founded the organization's Italian section. From 2004 to 2006, Griffo was part of the Italian delegation that shaped and secured approval of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and in 2007 he joined Paolo Ferrero, then Minister of Social Solidarity, in signing the treaty. Beyond his representation of the European Disability Forum (EDF) at various European events, Griffo now chairs RIDS (Italian Network for Disability and Development), a coalition of non-governmental organizations and disability organizations focused on international development cooperation for people with disabilities (ridsnetwork.org). Giampiero Griffo will soon be a guest of Ombre e Luci.

On April 10, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced new measures for the coronavirus emergency's "phase 2." He presented the Committee of Experts on economic and social matters, tasked with developing and proposing the strategy needed to manage the emergency and enable gradual recovery across social, economic, and productive sectors.

The task force is headed by manager Vittorio Colao. Among the experts representing numerous sectors is Giampiero Griffo, coordinator of the Technical and Scientific Committee of the National Observatory on the Condition of People with Disabilities.
