Franco Angeli publishers, through their "Comete" series — a rich collection of scientifically rigorous volumes devoted to mutual aid, understanding, and the analysis of everyday challenges — has released a new book we warmly recommend to our readers.
Here is the proposition: to parents and educators who are so often tempted to tell children, "Stop fidgeting!" "Can you hold still for two seconds?!" "If you go to bed without fussing tonight, I'll buy you something tomorrow" — the publisher poses a question: "Are you really certain that threats and rewards are the only way to guarantee peace for yourself and your child?"
The answer lies in this small book. The authors understand that children need to learn how to calm themselves, how to relax. Today's world is too stressful even for them. The book targets young children and offers simple games. What you need is minimal and readily available; the instructions are clear and complete. These are games that can help agitated children wind down — but they can also stimulate passive children, we believe. They are exercises that, in the form of play, strengthen concentration, whether focused on a part of the body or an object. It is this concentration that leads to relaxation.
These simple games, carefully explained, are a small treasure trove of sensory exercises and activities that teach children to know their own bodies. Yet they serve another purpose too: they help the child internalize experience. Most can be done in small groups, but ideally they happen between two people — an adult and a child. The age range in the title can be extended for children with developmental delays.

For all these reasons, we believe this book can offer excellent ideas to mothers and educators who struggle to know what to do when a child cannot play alone and, for one reason or another, must learn those essential skills: concentration and the ability to internalize.
