ATAD Comes to Rome: International Conference on Assistive Technology for Disability

The Second International Conference on Assistive Technology for Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities will take place over three days in Rome.

Technology plays a central role in daily life—and increasingly in the world of disability. Assistive technologies, a broad category encompassing innovations, tools, and devices designed to foster independence for people with multiple disabilities, have become essential to supporting autonomy and participation.

THE CONFERENCE — September 19–21 in Rome, the Second International Conference on Assistive Technology for Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities will bring together professionals, practitioners, and stakeholders working in assistive technology: doctors, psychologists, educators, rehabilitation specialists, engineers, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and augmentative communication experts. The conference is also open to students, doctoral researchers, faculty with research interests in the field, family associations, and independent manufacturers of assistive devices.

TOPICS — The conference will focus on assessing new communication support programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities; evidence-based projects designed to increase self-control and reduce behavioral problems in people with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities. Particular attention will be paid to communication and development in children with autism spectrum disorder, as well as deeper exploration of eye-tracking technology and the effects of sensory stimuli in individuals with severe disabilities.

TECHNOLOGY IN FOCUS — Significant time will be devoted to technological advances and their applications: the use of assistive devices to address cognitive and behavioral disorders in individuals with acquired neurological deficits; robots as tools for promoting interaction; and the practice of telemedicine and targeted interventions.

SPEAKERS — The conference will feature internationally recognized speakers, including Italian scientists specializing in assistive technology for rehabilitation and reeducation, as well as authors of articles featured in a special issue of Advances in Neurodevelopmental Disorders dedicated to intellectual disability research.

OPEN DAY — On September 21, 2019, from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Pontifical Salesian University in Rome, the National Center for Rare Diseases at the Higher Institute of Health will host an open day. This event is dedicated entirely to associations, families, stakeholders, and caregivers. Registration for the open day is FREE.
